EMC Engineer on ExoMars Rover
Favourite thing to do in my job: Solving engineering problems as part of a team.
An experienced Electronics Engineer
I live in sunny Bedfordshire with my family. I am keen on sports in particular 5Aside and keep fit. My main hobby is vinyl record and Hi -Fi. I have a vast collection of records and always looking at ways of improving my Hi-Fi system. In the spring and summer month I get green fingered and love to experiment by growing with different fruits and vegetables in my garden.
My Work on the ExoMars Mission
Ensure electronic units and cables do not interfere with each other, and the communications system, within their electromagnetic environment.
My work involves the analysis, test and simulation of the various Rover, or spacecraft system and sub-systems, (including the harness). The goal is to demonstrate that the all of the parts can work within their own, and external, electronic magnetic environment. This also includes Electro Static Discharge (ESD), Corona Discharge and Lightning where applicable. Most recently the Rover underwent its EMC test campaign. The Rover, showed stowed below, had to be placed within a “clean tent” environment for planetary protection purposes. The test instrumentation was place outside of the tent which posed numerous challenges compared to a conventional test.
My Typical Day: I normally arrive at work for 08:00 (ish). I would first check my emails and any meetings scheduled for the day. I will then divide my day up into chunks as the role requires technical support to all of the Rover equipment in some shape or form. This may be in the form of reviewing supplier documents, analysing test results or performing system level analysis/simulation.
