Mobile phones use the cell points (base stations with transmitters/receivers) to connect to the cellular network. And these are making the phone communication possible within few kilometres from the base station. That is why there are so many base stations everywhere – to ensure we can use the phone anywhere (almost ;-). In space (above 100 km above the ground) the phone would be too far from any base station, so it will not be able to connect.
However, the phone itself would be fine (if not exposed to the extreme temperatures, radiation, and vacuum that is ;-0). So, if in the future, the cellular signal network could be extended to cover say the low Earth orbit (200 – 300 km above the ground), you might be able to use a mobile phone there!
