      I think being inquisitive about how things are designed, put together and work is a good start. You then need some good maths, physics and IT skills and then it really depends what sort of space engineer you want to end up as, either specialising in something like electronics, materials, thermal or whatever, or taking an overview of the different aspects as a systems engineer.
